چکیده

Crew members on cruise ships are hired in a global labor market, and a major cost for cruise lines is moving crewmembers from their home cities to the cruise ship’s departure port. Complicating the crew scheduling problem is the uncertainty due to no-shows, terminations, and other reasons for crew to terminate their contract prematurely. To address this problem, this paper describes a scheduling system that implements a two-stage planning process that first determines overbooking levels for the number of crew to offer contracts to, and then second, a goal integer programming formulation to minimize the movement cost of assigning crew to ships while maintaining adequate crew levels and a desired crew region composition. We solve actual-sized problems characteristic of the cruise industry in a reasonably short amount of time. Experiments comparing the actual crew movement costs to the system’s projected crew movement costs show that the scheduling system can consistently reduce the movement costs in the range of 9–23%, better maintain desired crew levels, and better maintain desired crew region composition. An application of principal component analysis and logistic regression to facilitate production scheduling decision support system: an automotive industry case

Production planning and control (PPC) systems have to deal with rising complexity and dynamics. The complexity of planning tasks is due to some existing multiple variables and dynamic factors derived from uncertainties surrounding the PPC. Although literatures on exact scheduling algorithms, simulation approaches, and heuristic methods are extensive in production planning, they seem to be ineff...

Or in Airline Industry or in Airline

Next to fuel costs, crew costs are the largest direct operating cost of airlines. Therefore much research has been devoted to the planning and scheduling of crews over the last thirty years. The planning and scheduling of crews is usually considered as two problems: the crew pairing problem and the crew assignment (rostering) problem. These problems are solved sequentially. In this paper we foc...

A Comprehensive Approach for Railway Crew Scheduling Problem (Case Study: Iranian Railway Network)

The aim of this study is to propose a comprehensive approach for handling the crew scheduling problem in the railway systems. In this approach, the information of different railway trips are considered as input and the problem is divided to three separated phases. In phase I, we generate all feasible sequences of the trips, which are named as the pairings. A depth-first search algorithm is deve...

Multicommodity network flow approach to the railroad crew-scheduling problem

We present our solution to the crew-scheduling problem for North American railroads. (Crew scheduling in North America is very different from scheduling in Europe, where it has been well studied.) The crew-scheduling problem is to assign operators to scheduled trains over a time horizon at minimal cost while honoring operational and contractual requirements. Currently, decisions related to crew...

Rail Crew Re-Scheduling: from Planning towards Operations

In the Dutch railway network, there are a few times per week modifications in the timetable necessary due to unexpected maintenance projects or planned maintenance project that finish later than expected. Moreover, there are about 20 disruptions per day on average. These disruptions can be caused by the infrastructure (e.g. broken switches, no power supply), the weather (e.g. longer braking tim...
